WHY “BLACKLAND”?

Ever wonder how the Blackland Triathlon got its name?

Our race is named for the Blackland Prairie, the unique Texas landscape that is part of the history and natural heritage of North Texas. Named for its deep, rich black soil, the Blackland Prairie was once a vast tallgrass prairie filled with native grasses and wildflowers.

Those incredibly fertile soils also made the land ideal for farming and, later, development. Today, only a small fraction of the original native prairie remains—making it one of Texas’ rarest landscapes.

Blackland Triathlon is proud to carry the name of the land and community that have been home to this race for nearly two decades.
